This was my very first showreel. It shows the exercises that I initially used to develop my knowledge on animation principles, starting with the basics such as the 'rabbit hop' that develops the use of timing, spacing, squash and stretch. I then progressed onto simple cycles, such as walks, sneaks, 4 legged walks (dog) and wing cycles of birds. After the basic foundation had been laid I worked on developing character into these exercises, showing the beginning stages of acting.
This video shows the second 4 months to my first year on my degree. The exercises are more complex with fully cleaned up characters and original designs as well as more emphasis on the acting side of animation. This was the beginning of my obsession with the art of animation. Being able to bring a drawing to life, creating the illusion of a thinking, feeling, and truly real character is one of the most amazing things that you can see. It’s creating life with nothing more than a few lines on a piece of paper. This life can grip people in such an emotional way that they are helpless with laughter, heart filled with love or even bought to tears through their demise.
Animation is the greatest magical trick in the world, even after the secret is revealed the magic will never cease to amaze!
Where's my name in the credits for the STOP-MO???
ReplyDeleteI remember year 1 watching you draw and not doing much else. Your skills have since become immense, soon you shall be a crippled old draughtsman as you wish!
